You Want Grizzlies?!?! You Got Em'!!

Everyone here has seen a Grizzly Bear right?

Bear Country

This is an informational page designed as an exam project for Biology and I.I.S class. Thanks to Mrs. Wright and Mr. Albanese for letting this project happen. I'm going to start off by showing a few pictures here and then I'll let the facts start rollin...

And now we embark on our wonderous journey about Grizzlies!! The Grizzly Bear(or Ursus arctos for you geeks out there) Our Grizzly friends, commonly confused with it's brother the brown bear, gets it's name from the grizzled hairs that it develops as it grows older.

The Grizzly has the most widespread numbers among all eight of the other bear species. They like to hang out in the open meadows and grasslands and also like to play in lake areas. (See pic below)

Here are a few goodies to look at about the grizzly...

-Grizzlies usually stand about four feet tall when on all fours and measure to be about 7 feet long.

-The bears usually weigh from as low as 330 pounds to about 900 pounds..

-The lifespan for a bear is about 25+ years...

-Bears usually have claws that measure around 3 inches. Some, however have been known to have up to 6 inch claws -Yogi Bear has been a very popular spinoff of the bear species..to see him in action click on yogi..

The following observations were made during a 40 minute trip to the Columbus Zoo...During the period of time we watched as the bear ate, slept, walked, and layed down.

The info you have just read here is courtesy of a few different web sites. http://www.transact.deepthought.net/wildlife/grizzly-indx/34245.net http://widfire.com/species-american~ref/splender/brownbear_tutor.html

Large... intelligent... extremely strong... normally quite gentle and shy... A magnificent animal with a reputation as one of the largest and most ferocious mammals in North America. It's estimated that only 800-900 bears still survive in the lower 48. Despite the popular belief, grizzlies are 75% vegetarians and only rarely feed on meat. (NO they don't eat people) -Because of their large size, brown bears require a very high caloric intake of food. In order to achieve this, grizzly bears will eat (80 to 90 pounds) of food per day during the summer to early fall peak feeding period if it is available to them. During this eating extravaganza, grizzly bears are able to gain 1 (3 to 6 pounds) of fat each day. -We all know bears hibernate. But when do they come out? Most grizzly bears leave their winter dens over a one to two month period during April or May. Both the climatic conditions (snow cover and temperature) and physiological factors such as the bear's age, the status of its health and its remaining fat reserves affect the exact timing of emergence from its den. Normally, adult males emerge first. Females with newborn cubs are usually the last to leave their dens.

Here's a final pic for all to see....

Extra special thanks goes out to MRs.Wright and Mr.Albanese for letting this project happen. Thanks guys and I hope you like it...:) Chris
